Tesla India Leadership Shift: Sharad Agarwal Appointed to Head India Operations
Tesla, Inc. has named Sharad Agarwal, former head of Lamborghini India, as its new country lead for India operations.
Agarwal takes charge amid Volvo-style structural changes: previously, Tesla’s India operations were managed remotely by its China/SEA region team. Under his leadership, Tesla is looking to establish a stronger on-ground presence, sharpen its strategy locally, and build Indian operations with increased autonomy. electrive.com
With the luxury EV market in India still nascent and regulatory headwinds like high import duties and slow EV uptake persisting, Tesla appears to be repositioning. Knowing Agarwal’s track record in premium automotive segments, where he grew Lamborghini India’s reach beyond major metros into tier-2/3 cities, Tesla might aim first at India’s affluent EV buyers rather than immediately chasing mass‐market volumes.
Tesla’s first experience centres in Mumbai and New Delhi opened earlier this year, but sales have so far been modest: reportedly around 800 orders by October, far short of initial expectations.
Industry observers say this appointment signals Tesla’s renewed commitment to India but caution that success will depend on localising production, reducing costs, and building a broader ecosystem, not just sales presence.

This leadership change at Tesla reflects an important shift in the Indian mobility ecosystem. Having a high‐profile, India-savvy executive like Sharad Agarwal on the ground means Tesla recognises that market success in India will require deeper local engagement, not just global brand power.
For the tyre and allied mobility component sector, this is noteworthy: premium EVs demand tyres that can handle higher speeds, instant torque, heavier battery weights, and stricter performance criteria. As Tesla and others recalibrate their India strategy, suppliers, including tyre makers, should prepare for evolving requirements, tighter spec,s and premium segment expectations.
