Puducherry Launches 25 Olectra Electric Buses Under Smart City Initiative
The Union Territory of Puducherry has introduced a fleet of 25 electric buses manufactured by Olectra under its Smart City initiative. The new buses, comprising both AC and non-AC variants, mark the government’s effort to modernise public transport and reduce emissions. The fleet will operate on selected urban routes, with dedicated charging infrastructure being set up at key locations to support continuous operations.
Under the initiative, the bus operator will handle maintenance and electricity costs, while the transport agency manages fare collection. The project is part of a larger plan for Puducherry’s transport network to achieve full electrification by the end of the year, improving both commuter convenience and environmental performance.
Tyre Times’ View:
This development highlights how Indian cities are accelerating their transition to cleaner mobility. While the focus is on buses, it also points to the broader opportunity for tyre manufacturers and service providers to adapt to electric fleet requirements, including lower rolling resistance and improved durability for heavier EV loads.
